To have a heart

Ok, so I came across this challenge accidentally, but it came at exactly the right time for it to stand out. I have a friend who is at risk of becoming homeless, and I have another friend who is unable to return to their own home - and all I can do to help is to lend them an ear and let them know I’m here. It’s hard to feel powerless to save them from whatever pain the future might be holding. So to know I can help others, one step at a time, I kind of had to join the cause.

The other reason I decided to jump on board, is for my own heart, my health, my fitness. A good daily walk can help my heart in oh so many ways.
You know, the homeless often rely on a dozen people to give them enough small change to grab a bottle of water - where I just stroll straight up to a counter mindlessly and grab a latte, extra shot, and maybe a touch of hazelnut? I go on a quick walk to the shops, head back with some random junk food, and jump on the couch to  play with my phone, where a homeless person in the city might be carrying a sleeping bag and backpack with them everywhere so they’re unable to really run around whenever they like, if they have a phone than their battery is most likely dead, and I don’t think you can ever get comfy sleeping on a sidewalk?! You see, the homeless struggle with their health all the time, while I have every opportunity to take care of myself, and all I do is neglect my body’s health. I promised myself at the beginning of this year, I would take care of my body and my heart this year, because I can, so this fundraiser is the perfect opportunity to actually hold myself to account and make it happen. It was only as I wrote this that I realised this is yet another thing 10 times harder for the homeless, that us everyday people with homes are generally blind too.

I want to help the homeless take care of their hearts. I want to take care of my own heart. And in a country that prides itself as a “land of opportunity” - I need to encourage our leaders to have a heart for this voiceless community.

Here I am, ready for the challenge! Can you help me? Or, more accurately, can you help the homeless? I’ve made my first donation - I can miss a coffee or two. Please, make a donation - or maybe walk with me even. Let’s make a difference!

I'm walking for the 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness

Right now, there are 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness. That's 1 in 210 people.

This March, I will be taking part in Walk the Walk and going the distance for the 122,000 people doing it tough in our community.

I'm walking to raise funds for Orange Sky's vital work providing connection through clean laundry, warm showers, and genuine conversation.

Please support my walk to positively connect communities and support people who need it the most.

Together, we can show Aussies experiencing homelessness they're not alone.
